The word 'schnauze' means muzzle in german. The schnauzer has a thick moustache on its muzzle. The schnauzer's history can be traced back to the sixteenth century in Germany. The Giant and the Standard Schnauzer are classified as working dogs. The miniature schnauzer is classified as a terrier. Miniature Schnauzers are known for their lively personality. They were bred to gaurd herds and families, and to keep rats and varmints out of the barns and away from the homes. Standard Schnauzers were crossed with several small breeds of dogs (such as the Poodle and Affenpinscher) to create the smaller size of the Miniature Schnauzer.
